S1 E36 | Pai Canyon Sunset – Getting Lost in Pai, Thailand
After arriving in Pai, Thailand, we found a simple stay that cost us just ₹300 ($3.50). It was neat, clean, and even had a private bathroom — the perfect budget room for weary backpackers. With our bags dropped, we set out around 4:30 PM to catch the sunset at Pai Canyon.
There’s a popular saying among travelers — “Get lost in Pai.” Many arrive planning just a night or two, only to extend their stay for weeks. As soon as we rode through the green valleys and flower-lined roads, we understood why. Pai had a magic of its own — slow, peaceful, and impossibly beautiful.
Pai Canyon is often described as the Grand Canyon of Pai, though on a smaller scale. What it lacks in size, it makes up for in atmosphere. Rugged cliffs and sandy ridges overlook vast green valleys, and as sunset neared, travelers from all over the world quietly gathered to watch the sky change colors.
We found ourselves swept up in the stillness of the moment. Shish hesitated to explore the steeper, sandy slopes, so she stayed on safe ground while I ventured further along the ridges. From her spot, the soft glow of the evening light was just as magical.
The canyon wasn’t just about views — it was about the feeling of being present, surrounded by strangers who, like us, had come chasing the simple beauty of a sunset.
Pai wasn’t just another stop on our journey. Between the budget stay, friendly locals, and lush mountain scenery, it felt like a place that could easily hold us longer. Our visa didn’t allow us to linger, but in just a short time, Pai had left its mark on us.
If you’re traveling through northern Thailand, don’t miss Pai Canyon at sunset. Come for the view, but stay for the feeling — that’s what makes Pai unforgettable.
