S1 E80 | A Birthday Hike to Limestone Peaks in Vang Vieng, Laos
After a day of splashing around in Vang Vieng’s famous blue lagoons, we continued celebrating Shishira’s birthday in the most adventurous way possible. With the countryside stretching out before us, we set off on our scooter, passing through quiet villages and rice fields until a towering limestone mountain caught our eye.
The decision was instant — we had to climb it. The trail, however, was no easy walk. Recent rains had left the ground muddy and slippery, and the limestone rocks were sharp and steep. Vines twisted around our path like little obstacles, and every step was a careful balance between slipping and pulling ourselves upward. Yet, the challenge only added to the excitement.
Along the way, we made a few friends, laughed through the struggles, and even managed to sneak in a birthday song for Shishira — affectionately called the “mushroom girl” thanks to her rain-drenched look under a round hat. The climb tested our stamina, but when we reached the top, the reward was unforgettable. From the heart-shaped viewpoint, we watched the sun dip behind the mountains, painting the rice fields below in shades of gold.
The summit held one more surprise — two motorbikes somehow parked at the top, leaving us completely baffled. But the real twist came when Shishira lost her birthday hat, her third one on this trip. We joked about adding a new category to our expense reports: “Things Shishira Lost.”
Descending was just as tricky, the mud making it a slippery slide at times. By the time we reached the base, our legs were aching, but our spirits were high. The day ended with a simple dinner back in town, tired yet grateful for such a memorable celebration.
