S1 E10 | Street Food in Havelock Island, Andaman
We started this vlog a little later than usual, around sunset in Havelock, after a couple of intense days filled with unexpected challenges. Though we’ll share that story in our next video, today we wanted to focus on something lighter and tastier—exploring the street food scene in Havelock Island. For such a small island in the Andamans, the local market at Govindnagar has a surprising number of food stalls, especially the small blue kiosks serving freshly made Indian snacks.
Our first stop was a tiny shop selling piping hot samosas for just ₹10. Crisp, flavorful, and perfect for the evening, they reminded us why street food in India always hits differently. From there, we walked over to another busy stall serving a variety of chaat dishes. We started with a plate of pani puri (or phuchkas as they’re called here). For ₹20, we got 10 pieces filled with spicy water and sweet chutney—tangy, refreshing, and addictive. Next came the dahi puri, topped with chilled, freshly set curd, spices, and garnishes. At ₹60, it felt like a proper feast in itself and one of the best chaats we’ve had on our budget travels so far.
Right next door, a sweet shop caught our attention. Among the many Indian desserts on offer—laddu, rasgulla, gulab jamun—we picked kalkand, a childhood favorite. The nostalgia of biting into that crystalline sweet was unmatched, even if Shishira isn’t the biggest fan of desserts. I couldn’t resist having more while she captured the moment behind the camera.
Before heading back, we also grabbed some local snacks to carry—groundnut packets and puffed poha, simple but satisfying evening bites. The market vibe, the aromas of fresh food, and the friendly stall owners made this street food exploration in Havelock truly memorable.
Traveling on a budget in the Andamans doesn’t mean missing out on authentic flavors. In fact, these street food stalls are not only affordable but also give you a taste of everyday island life beyond the tourist restaurants. If you’re ever in Havelock, don’t just stick to seafood shacks—step into the market circle, try the samosas, pani puri, dahi puri, and grab a sweet to end the evening. It’s the kind of food experience that makes travel special, one plate at a time.
