S1 E07 | Walking to Kalapathar Beach, Puppies, and a Long Chat Over Lunch
We woke up to a bright sunny day—sunscreen on, umbrellas handy, fully covered for the humidity—and decided to walk all the way to Kalapathar Beach. It’s about 4.5 km from our resort, and this was our first visit there.
The walk started strong, but soon turned into a sweaty adventure. With the sun blazing, we quickly realized how much we missed the cloudy days that made walking easier. Along the way, we discovered that this stretch of the island isn’t deserted—it’s dotted with premium resorts, shady spots, and stunning roadside coves where the water shimmered a surreal blue.
We paused often: to take pictures, to laugh at Shishira’s endless energy, to swat away bees, and to marvel at how close the road runs to the sea. At one point, we spotted Williams Island and Lawrence Island across the water—on a clear line east, it felt wild to think Thailand was just a few hundred kilometers away.
After over an hour of walking, drenched in sweat but excited, we finally reached Kalapathar Beach. It’s quieter than Vijayanagar or Radhanagar, with recliners shaded by trees, small shops, and the most gorgeous turquoise water—even under clouds and drizzle. A bunch of friendly puppies kept us company while we sat for half an hour doing absolutely nothing but watching the waves.
For transport, here’s the scoop:
-
Auto: ₹300 one way (hard to find here).
-
Bus: cheap, reliable, and the option we took back.
-
Walk: free but prepare for humidity!
Before leaving, we had refreshing coconut water (₹50)—huge and sweet, the perfect beachside treat.
Lunch took us back near our resort, to the thali place we loved yesterday. Today’s spread was baby corn curry, gobi curry, dal, chapatis, papads, pickle, and salad—simple, hearty, delicious. But the highlight wasn’t just the food. The restaurant owner struck up a conversation about websites and digital work, and what was meant to be a quick meal stretched into a 3-hour chat!
Back at the resort, we freshened up. Unfortunately, my allergies kicked in—sneezing endlessly from the heat and pollen—so the evening was low-key. Still, we treated ourselves to dinner at Fat Martin again, this time with dessert to lift the mood.
Not every travel day is about hopping beaches—sometimes it’s about long walks, unexpected puppies, local conversations, and quiet evenings. That’s what Kalapathar gave us.
Catch it all—the walk, the views, the thali, and our puppy friends—in today’s vlog!
