S1 E27 | Exploring Rabdentse Ruins and Local Food in Pelling, Sikkim

Vlogs

On this day in Pelling, Sikkim, we explored the Rabdentse archaeological park and its surroundings. Rabdansi, the second capital of Sikkim, is steeped in history and natural beauty.

Walking 800 meters from the park entrance, we reached the ruins of the old fortress. Engulfed in thick foliage, moss, and roots reclaiming the walls, the site offers a surreal glimpse into centuries past. Maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India, this area also has remnants of residential complexes and religious structures, reflecting the kingdom’s spiritual and administrative life.

The fortress isn’t a single structure; its remains are scattered across a green forested area. Upper Pelling offers stunning views and easy access to restaurants and taxis.

Visiting all major sights in Pelling took us around 6–7 hours, and hiring a taxi for the day cost about INR 2,000 in the off-season. Peak season rates could go up to INR 4,500–5,000.

After exploring, we tried some local delicacies:

  • Noodle soup – warm and comforting after the walk.

  • Vegetable Gatok – a deep-fried stuffed snack garnished with raw onions and coriander.

We loved the Kanchenjunga waterfalls, Rimbey River, and Big Buddha Temple, but the charm of wandering through cloud forests and mossy ruins made this day unforgettable.

Some tips for Travelers
