S1 E21 | Ross Island and Sound and Light Show: Exploring Port Blair’s History
In this episode, we explore Ross Island, one of Port Blair’s historic gems, and experience the Sound and Light Show, which brings the island’s colonial history to life.
Our day started at the Anthropological Museum. Tickets cost INR 100 per person, and we also spent INR 20 on a bus ride to reach there. The museum is highly informative about the tribes of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, although photography isn’t allowed inside.
Next, we picked up some precious stones and had lunch at a local Rajasthani Dhaba, spending INR 200.
We then headed to Ross Island by ferry. The boat tickets cost INR 1,000 for two, and the Sound and Light Show tickets were INR 800 for two. While many visitors go during the day, we opted for the evening show, combining a short visit with the engaging Sound and Light Show, which highlights the island’s history—from British colonial administration to its later significance during World War II.
On the island, we saw dilapidated Victorian-era structures, old churches, government buildings, and overgrown gardens. Nature has reclaimed much of the architecture, creating an eerie yet beautiful ambiance. To get around quickly, we took a buggy ride, making it easier to explore areas.
After returning, we treated ourselves to a veg buffet at The Dining House, enjoying a variety of curries, rice, noodles, starters, and sweets—a perfect way to end a busy day.
Before wrapping up, we visited a local shop selling souvenirs and picked unique Jarawa tribal items for a giveaway to our viewers, making our visit to Ross Island memorable in more ways than one.
