S1 E11 | Surviving Snake Encounters and Island Life Realities in Havelock

It was just a typical rainy day on Havelock Island, and while the rain poured down, we warmed up with hot cup noodles and let the day slowly unfold. Our plan was simple—secure ferry tickets to Neil Island for the next day and soak in the calm of island life. The local bus ride was short and sweet, just a few kilometers from our hotel to the jetty, where the vibrant little restaurants and shaded stalls gave a glimpse into the authentic local scene.

Booking tickets was straightforward—just a quick queue with only a few people and a brief form to fill out. That easy process gave us plenty of time to explore nearby eateries and reminisce about past visits with family, enjoying the true flavor of Havelock’s simple joys.

But the calm was shattered one evening when we discovered a dark, scaly visitor coiled right inside our room. A snake had crept in, uninvited and silently making itself at home. What followed was equal parts terrifying and surreal—slow, deliberate movements, the shock of seeing such a creature so close, and the nighttime vigilance that followed. With the help of the manager and his attendants, we managed to coax the snake out and send it slithering safely into the night.

The next night brought a new challenge—a second snake, thinner and brown with a strange metallic sheen, found its way into our room through hidden gaps in the door frame. Once again, the staff came to the rescue, sealing gaps with bamboo and cloth, clearing out spiders, and giving us a clean, safe space to rest.

Those few nights taught us more than just how to handle unexpected wildlife encounters—they revealed the delicate balance of island living. The humid air, imperfect building repairs, and proximity to nature all play a role in the unpredictable beauty and rawness of life here.
